At OCI Energy, we live out our core values as part of our daily work routines, in the projects we develop, and in the communities we service.
Our Community
Corporate Giving
Our employees are dedicated professionals who believe in the good we are doing for the environment, in our neighborhoods, and across the globe. For more than 10 years, they have committed their financial resources, time, and talent in support of causes that help support the following objectives:
- Youth Development & STEM Education
- Environmental Stewardship
- Energy & Innovation
- Research & Biotechnology
We also support causes and events that may arise in any given year. In 2023, after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southern and central Turkey, OCI Energy made a significant contribution to the relief effort; we served as the presenting sponsor of CPS Energy’s annual golf tournament which raised $285,000 for its Residential Energy Assistance Partnership; our Annual United Way Employee Donation Drive netted the most ever; and in an effort to raise cultural awareness, we helped fund Musical Bridges Around the World which hosted a concert with an orchestra from Gwangju, South Korea.
Below are a few of the other initiatives in which our employees have taken part and continue to participate in.
United Way Employee Donation Drive
Call it a victory! Our annual United Way Employee Donation Drive typically exceeds expectations and raises thousands of dollars for San Antonio-based nonprofits. Thanks to the dollar-for-dollar company match, our community is the ultimate winner.
ThriveWell Cancer Foundation
We continue to support the ThriveWell Cancer Foundation by sponsoring and attending its annual luncheon in April and the Healing Hearts Gala in October. We also take time to gather items and put together care packages for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
GrillsGiving
Brisket, ribs, and sausage – oh my! OCI Energy is a proud sponsor of CPS Energy’s fall event which pits barbecue teams against each other in a cook-off that fires up the taste buds. All proceeds benefit the Residential Energy Assistance Partnership which helps struggling customers pay their utility bills.
Boys & Girls Club
In 2019, OCI Energy became a corporate sponsor of the Boys & Girls Club of San Antonio. We took part in STEM week activities, teaching kids all about solar and solar farms and sharing our award-winning book, Bryan’s Solar Adventure.
Communities In Schools
Keeping kids in school and giving them the tools they need is a priority for us. That is why we participate in the annual Stuff the Bus Back to School Donation Drive. We have also sponsored the organization’s Mars Colony Competition and STEM nights.
San Antonio Food Bank
In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, employees stepped up to help feed families and fund the San Antonio Food Bank. Over a two-week period, we gathered 166 pounds of food and raised $1,600.
Students at Oak Grove Elementary
If you want to design, construct, practice law, crunch numbers, or market a project, you can do those things while working at a solar company. Students at Oak Grove Elementary learned about all the possibilities during Career Day.
Hockey Fights Cancer
Hockey Fights Cancer, and we were there to watch as our San Antonio Rampage took on the Rockford IceHogs on November 17, 2018. The Rampage won 2-1, but the ThriveWell Cancer Foundation was the big winner as part of the proceeds benefited the organization.
Children’s Hospital of San Antonio
Make some noise! That’s exactly what we did when we gathered noisemakers to give to the Child Life Services department at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. This donation project was part of our larger United Way Employee Fund Drive for 2018.
Boys and Girls Club’s Fall STEM Fest
Elementary through middle school students learned all about solar and even made solar bracelets when we teamed up with Mission Solar Energy to host an information and activity table at the Boys and Girls Club’s Fall STEM Fest on September 20, 2018.
Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival
In collaboration with the Land Heritage Institute, EPIcenter, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI), Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation, Texas Commission on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Mission Solar Energy, Sun Action Trackers, and Sistine Solar, OCISP provided financial and technical support for the world’s first solar mural. Entitled La Monarca and created by Cruz Ortiz, the artwork was printed on special film, applied to four solar panels, and then put on display at the San Antonio Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival on November 10, 2017.
National Night Out
OCISP served as a sponsor of the inaugural National Night Out at Brooks City Base on October 3, 2017. Along with our sister company, Mission Solar Energy (MSE), we also hosted a fast-pitch game where visitors could hurl chunks of ice to test the durability of MSE’s solar panels.
Hurricane Harvey Relief
On September 1, 2017, OCI Energy and Mission Solar Energy employees donated two truckloads of water, diapers, and baby wipes to the Hurricane Harvey relief effort. The Category 4 storm made landfall along the Texas Gulf Coast on August 25.
SolarJobs SA
In collaboration with St. Philip’s College, Project Quest, and the San Antonio Area Foundation, OCI Energy created, funded, and helped launch an education and career development program called SolarJobs SA.
Through SolarJobs SA, the college now offers more certification and degree programs, is an official NABCEP testing center, and provides scholarships for every student enrolled in the Power Generation & Alternative Energy program. SolarJobs SA also helps students purchase books, lab equipment, and tools and connects them to Project Quest which assists students with other support services like rental assistance, daycare, and gas cards. Students also receive assistance with their resumes, interviewing skills, and job placement.
SolarJobs SA kicked off January 2023 with a public event and pledge of $500,000 from OCI Energy.
Projects for the Community
OCI Energy has pledged to be a responsible corporate citizen, and as a result, we have committed to several community projects around San Antonio.
DoSeum – OCI Energy provided 705 solar panels for a rooftop PV projects that produces 25% of the museum’s energy. This high profile project included one of the first solar education facilities in San Antonio.
San Antonio Botanical Garden – OCI Energy donated a rooftop solar system for the Goldsbury Foundation Pavilion and Chef Teaching Kitchen at the newly expanded San Antonio Botanical Garden. Mission Solar Energy, our sister company, provided the 99 modules.
Confluence Park – OCI Energy donated funds for a solar array made up of 38 modules, provided by Mission Solar Energy, at San Antonio’s newest park. When the project is completed later this spring, it will generate 300 watts of energy and include an educational and interactive touch-screen kiosk.
Social Responsibility
Our parent company, OCI Holdings, shares in our belief and commitment to contributing to our communities.
